PITTSBURGH BUSINESS TIMES: State Rep. Ed Gainey joins URA board

Mayor Bill Peduto reached into the struggling East End neighborhoods he vowed to help during his election run to find his first new appointment to the board of Pittsburgh’s Urban Redevelopment Authority.

Ed Gainey, an established political ally of the mayor and a Pennsylvania state representative based in East Liberty whose district includes the neighborhood along with Larimer, Homewood and other communities struggling from a lack of investment, joined the board at its February meeting Thursday.

Gainey was elected as vice chair of the board.

He replaces Jim Kuntz, who resigned, a procedural request the Peduto administration has made of all city board and authority members so it can begin a selection process to make its own choices through the Pittsburgh Foundation-led Talent City program.

Kevin Acklin, URA board chair and the mayor’s chief of staff, said the choice of Gainey reflects in part the mayor’s plan to bring new investment and emphasis to the kinds of neglected East End neighborhoods that much of Gainey’s district includes.
